Uptown Movement is a gym that focuses on building strength & mobility, located in Inwood/Washington Heights, NYC. We help everyday people get stronger, move better, and feel more at home in their bodies. Small classes, real coaching, and a progressive system that meets you where you’re at.
-
Our classes are for people who want guidance and to see progress, without the “punishment workout” vibe. Beginners, people returning to exercise, busy professionals, ex-athletes, “I hate big gyms” people, and anyone who wants to gain strength + mobility with coaching that actually teaches you.
-
All our programming is designed to build long-term strength, mobility and endurance. Our core programming is supplemented with additional mobility or conditioning work, depending on what you need.
Foundations – your introduction to the gym. If you’re new to training or new to our style this helps build the basics, giving you confidence and a solid base to progress from.
Strength & Mobility – our core program. This is strength training through full ranges of motion so your joints feel good while your strength and mobility increases. Coaches tailor the exercises to each member’s individual level.
Mobility & Flow – Flexibility work that targets specific joints coupled with bodyweight movement patterns that feel creative and athletic.
Kettlebell Conditioning – kettlebell skills + conditioning, taught safely and progressively.
-
Our classes are small—an average of 10 people. You’ll be seen, coached, and progressed. No hiding in the back. No chaos.
-
Absolutely! About half our members started as beginners. We scale everything. You’ll start with a 1-on-1 assessment and (if you choose classes) six-weeks of onboarding, so you learn the basics, as well as having consistent check ins with your coach to help you adjust.
-
We chat about your goals, look at how you move (nothing scary), and map your starting plan: classes, personal training, or a combo. You’ll leave knowing exactly what you are trying to achieve and what to do next.
-
We’re coaching-driven and progression-based. Quality before speed. We explain what you’re doing and why. Coaches know your name and teach you how to scale the movements to get the most benefit out of them. There are clear checkpoints to mark your progress, not random workouts. This is more like personal training delivered in a group setting.
-
Most people thrive on 2–4 sessions/week. We’ll help you choose a cadence that fits your life and how your body recovers from workouts.
-
Usually within 2–4 weeks you’ll feel less stiffness, more energy, and confidence with basic weightlifting. With consistency, strength and body composition changes develop over 8–12+ weeks. Our ultimate goal is to help you make activity a part of your lifestyle for the long-term, and that happens over a longer time frame.
-

-
Yoga is a beautiful practice. Our mobility work is strength-biased and joint-specific. We increase mobility by loading end ranges, building control, and teaching you to own positions under tension so you can actually use new ranges of motions while lifting and in your day to day life.
-
We love kettlebells, but they’re a tool, not a religion. You’ll see barbells, dumbbells, bodyweight movements, bands—whatever best serves the goal of the exercise.
-
Most likely, yes. We’ll adjust movements and tempos and build capacity safely. If we need to coordinate with a clinician, we’re happy to do so.
